LISTEN: New Shawano Rec Center Fitness Center Offers More Space, Extended Access

SHAWANO, WI – The newly renovated Shawano Recreation Center will feature a much larger fitness area when the facility opens, giving visitors more room to work out and potentially more flexibility in when they can use it.

Parks and Recreation Director Matt Hendricks says the difference between the old weight room and the new fitness center is significant.

“The old weight room, you know, if there was five or six people in there, that was pretty cramped. That was pretty tight,” Hendricks said. “So the capacity is about two and a half times what the old one was. So you have more elbow room.”

Along with the expanded space and new equipment, Hendricks says the facility’s design could also allow the fitness center to remain open beyond the recreation center’s normal hours.

“If there’s an after-hours scenario, you know, our building closes at 8 p.m., we’ll probably be able to leave the weight room open longer than that,” Hendricks said. “People could still come and work out and that’ll all be via key fob access.”

Hendricks says that could give members another option for working out later in the evening without requiring the entire recreation center to remain open.

The Parks and Recreation Department is also looking for feedback from the community as it determines what extended fitness center hours would work best for users.

The larger fitness area is one of several upgrades included in the renovation, with city officials continuing to highlight new features ahead of the recreation center’s reopening.
