New Shawano Rec Center Adds Meeting Rooms, Workspaces

SHAWANO, WI – The newly renovated Shawano Recreation Center is offering more than just updated fitness and aquatic amenities, with new spaces designed to give residents places to meet, work and connect.

Parks and Recreation Director Matt Hendricks recently gave local media a look inside the renovated facility, including a new area known as “The Den.”

“So now we have what’s called the den. And the den is just that. It’s a place where community members can come. They can play a game of cribbage. They can hang out while their kids are swimming,” Hendricks said.

Hendricks says the long-term goal is to also make The Den a place where local businesses, nonprofit organizations and other community groups can meet, work and collaborate.

The space includes individual computer workstations, giving residents another option for completing work, training or other online tasks away from home.

Hendricks said those computers could be used for continuing education, job-related training or even virtual appointments, although they are located in a more public portion of the facility.

“Interact with a doctor or have some sort of, you know, continuing education or they’re doing some training. So these computers are in a more public area. You know, if you’re comfortable with other people walking around, no big deal,” Hendricks said.

For residents who need more privacy, Hendricks says the recreation center also includes smaller private meeting rooms. Those spaces could be used for virtual doctor appointments, personal conversations, classes, meetings or other small-group needs.

The additions are part of the larger renovation of the Shawano Recreation Center, with the facility designed to serve as both a recreation destination and a broader community gathering space.
