WAUPACA COUNTY, WI – The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is moving forward with plans to improve a stretch of eastbound US Highway 10 in Waupaca County and gathered public feedback during a public involvement meeting held Wednesday evening at the Waupaca Public Library.
The proposed project covers eastbound US 10 from Anderson Road to Apple Tree Lane and is designed to improve pavement conditions while increasing safety along one of the county’s busiest highway corridors.
Project Manager Korey Boehm said the work will focus on extending the life of the roadway while improving the driving experience.
“Joint repairs to improve the pavement quality and improve the ride of the roadway,” Boehm said. “There are some areas that obviously have some extreme distress that need to be addressed. We’ll be redoing the shoulders as well, putting new surface on them, new pavement markings, rumble strips, et cetera, across the whole length of the roadway.”
One of the biggest proposed changes is at the Anderson Road intersection, where WisDOT is recommending converting the existing median crossing into a right-in, right-out intersection.
Boehm said the proposal is based on crash data collected during the design process. “Our proposed improvements there are actually to close off the median crossing and turn Anderson Road into a right-in, right-out because there have been a number of crashes in recent years, including some with injuries,” Boehm said. “It’s looking to improve that situation and minimize the risk to the traveling public.”
The intersection redesign generated significant discussion during Wednesday’s meeting, with WisDOT specifically seeking public feedback before making a final decision.
“We’re looking to gather public input on that as well as the general improvements on the roadway,” Boehm said.
Boehm noted that WisDOT has already met with local officials to review the project and discuss the proposed intersection changes before opening the conversation to the public.
While some design details remain under review, Boehm emphasized the reconstruction project itself is moving forward.
“The project is planned for construction in either 2030 or, if funding becomes available, it could move up to 2029,” he said. “Some of the details around Anderson Road will depend on the public comments we receive and weighing the different options before making a final decision.”
During construction, motorists can expect a combination of single-lane closures and temporary traffic shifts. Boehm said one section near the WIS 54 interchange will require eastbound traffic to be shifted onto the westbound lanes while crews complete more extensive pavement repairs.
WisDOT officials say comments received during the public involvement process will be reviewed before finalizing the project design ahead of construction.
