SHAWANO, WI- The Shawano County Fair is introducing a new electronic admission system this year, and fairgoers are being asked to be patient as volunteers learn the new process.
Shawano Agricultural Society Treasurer Bob Krause said the fair will use scanners to track attendance at the gates. Lifetime members will receive Lifetime membership cards that will be scanned each time they enter the grounds.
Krause said the new system is designed to provide a more accurate count of attendance, but acknowledged it will require an adjustment for both volunteers and visitors.
“In the past, a lot of people would simply drive through the gate, hold up their wristband and keep going,” Krause explained. “Now, everyone will need to stop so their pass or membership card can be scanned.”
The biggest challenge, according to Krause, will be training the many volunteers who help staff the entrance gates.
“We’re going to have a bunch of folks learning how to use the scanners,” he said. “Please bear with us. The first couple days of the fair there may be a little backup, but we’re going to do the best we can.”
Krause said both volunteers and fair officials expect the process to become much smoother after the first few days as everyone becomes familiar with the new technology.
He noted that the pass can only be scanned once per day.
