CECIL, WI- The Cecil Mudhens are building momentum after a big weekend on the diamond, winning the Shawano Lobos Tournament before following it up with a victory over the Dairyland League-leading Waupaca Lakemen.
Cecil overcame an early five-run deficit to defeat Hofa Park 7-5 in the Lobos Tournament championship game. Hofa Park broke open a scoreless game in the fourth inning, scoring five runs on three hits.
The Mudhens answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Braden Uelmen and Logan Thiex drew walks before Mason Meverden delivered a double to center field to score Uelmen. Jake Polzin added a sacrifice fly to bring home Meverden.
Cecil completed the comeback in the sixth inning. Garrett Engel started the rally with a single, and after a Uelmen walk, Thiex delivered an RBI single to cut the deficit to 5-3. Meverden and Polzin followed with key hits to give the Mudhens a 6-5 lead, and Miles Friedman added an insurance run with an RBI single.
Logan Thiex earned the win in relief, shutting down Hofa Park over the final innings while allowing just two hits and striking out four. Connor Kurki started for Cecil, striking out six while allowing four hits and five runs, none of which were earned.
Reese Stoltenow was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after leading Cecil offensively, batting .556 with two doubles and three runs scored.
The Mudhens carried that momentum into Sunday’s Dairyland League matchup against the first-place Waupaca Lakemen, earning an 11-5 victory at Joe Peterman Field.
Waupaca wasted no time taking the lead, as Parker Krcmar hit a home run on the first pitch of the game to put the Lakemen ahead 1-0. Cecil responded immediately, with Garrett Engel hitting a home run in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game.
The Mudhens took the lead in the second inning after Isaac Boldt reached on an error and Reese Stoltenow delivered a double following a Mason Zuleger fielder’s choice.
Cecil broke the game open with a five-run third inning and continued adding runs throughout the afternoon. The Mudhens collected 15 hits, with Stoltenow, Boldt, Braden Uelmen and Mason Meverden each recording two hits.
Easton Engel, Garrett Engel and Ken Casper each added home runs in the victory.
Meverden earned the win on the mound, pitching five innings and allowing eight hits and four runs. Noah Beilfuss finished the game with four scoreless innings, allowing no hits while combining with Meverden for nine strikeouts.
With the win, Cecil improves to 8-6 in Dairyland League play and will return to action Sunday, August 2nd, against the Navarino Rangers.
