SHAWANO, WI – Following a recent incident in Menasha where a young child was struck by an e-bike, the Shawano Police Department is reminding parents and riders to take e-bike and e-scooter safety seriously.
Shawano Police Chief Mike Musolff said the growing popularity of electric bikes and scooters has also brought increased safety concerns, especially involving younger riders.
“One of the things that parents need to really think about is the fact that these are going very fast,” Musolff said. “These scooters and e-bikes are going very fast, and their kids may not be ready for such speed.”
Musolff said parents should make sure children understand the rules of the road before allowing them to ride and recognize that many electric bikes and scooters travel much faster than traditional bicycles.
The reminder comes after a child was reportedly struck by an e-bike in Menasha, highlighting the importance of safe riding practices and awareness around pedestrians.
The Shawano Police Department has also been educating residents about Wisconsin’s e-bike classifications and the laws that apply to riders. Officials encourage users to obey traffic laws, yield to pedestrians, ride responsibly, and avoid excessive speeds in neighborhoods, parks, and other public areas.
Musolff said the department will continue sharing educational information with the community.
