Shawano Has History Project Continues to Expand Across the Community

SHAWANO, WI – The Shawano Has History project continues to grow, giving residents and visitors more opportunities to discover the city’s rich history while walking through downtown.

The Shawano County Historical Society has now installed 20 historical plaques at locations throughout downtown Shawano. Each plaque features historic photographs, background information about the site, and a QR code that allows visitors to access additional details online.

The two newest additions recognize the Lieg Building, home to Old Glory Candy, and the historic Chaimson’s Fair Store, adding two more landmarks to the growing self-guided history tour.

Historical Society leaders say the project has been well received by the community and visitors alike. Its success has also attracted statewide attention, with the Wisconsin State Historical Society planning to recognize the initiative during an event next month.

Building on that momentum, organizers are already looking beyond downtown Shawano. Plans are underway to expand the historical plaque program into other communities across the county, with Bonduel among the first locations expected to receive future markers.
