IOLA, WI – Seymour’s 17U American Legion baseball team is headed to the state tournament after an impressive run through the Region 3 Tournament, battling back from an opening-round loss to claim the regional championship Tuesday night.
After dropping its first game of the tournament to Wittenberg 5-4 on Friday, Seymour responded by winning six straight games, including two victories over previously unbeaten Amherst, to earn the Region 3 title at Scandinavia Memorial Field.
Seymour opened its comeback with a 14-4 victory over Clintonville on Saturday before eliminating host Iola 5-3 on Sunday.
The biggest win of the weekend came later Sunday when Seymour faced Wittenberg in an elimination game. Trailing entering the bottom of the ninth inning, Seymour staged a dramatic rally, scoring four runs without recording an out to complete a stunning 5-4 walk-off victory and advance to the championship round.
That momentum carried into Monday, when Seymour handed unbeaten Amherst its first loss of the tournament, edging the Falcons 2-1 to force a winner-take-all championship game.
The decisive title game began Monday evening, but severe weather suspended play with Amherst holding a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning.
When play resumed Tuesday, Seymour completed another comeback, scoring three unanswered runs to defeat Amherst 5-3 and capture the Region 3 championship.
Amherst entered the championship round undefeated after opening the tournament with wins over Clintonville, Edgar and Wittenberg.
