SHAWANO, WI- The Shawano County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help after a dog was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and other serious injuries in the Town of Maple Grove.
Authorities say deputies were called on July 15 after the injured dog was discovered near the intersection of Cedar Drive and Maple Road. The dog was taken to Specialized Veterinary Care of Shawano for emergency treatment and is now in the care of the Shawano County Humane Society.
The dog, now named “Sunny” by the Humane Society, is a brown mixed-breed weighing about 35 pounds and believed to be around 8 years old.
Veterinarians determined Sunny had suffered eight gunshot wounds, a broken leg, and numerous other traumatic injuries. They believe the injuries occurred approximately two to four days before the dog was found.
Investigators say little is known about Sunny’s history. The dog has a microchip registered to an out-of-state individual, and authorities are working with the Humane Society to identify previous owners or any animal shelters that may have cared for the dog.
At this time, investigators have no known suspects or witnesses.
The Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who may have information about the case to contact the Shawano County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency dispatch center at 715-526-3111 or email Deputy Josh Heider at josh.heider@shawanocountywi.gov.
Sheriff’s officials say cases like this are especially difficult to investigate without witnesses and are encouraging anyone with even the smallest piece of information to come forward.
The Sheriff’s Office also thanked the Shawano County Humane Society and Specialized Veterinary Care of Shawano for the care they have provided to Sunny, who remains under veterinary supervision and is expected to undergo additional medical procedures once cleared by veterinarians.
Those wishing to help with Sunny’s recovery can make donations to the Shawano County Humane Society to assist with the cost of the dog’s ongoing medical treatment.
