NFHS Approves Major High School Baseball Rule Changes Beginning in 2027

NORTHEAST WISCONSIN – High school baseball teams across Wisconsin will see several significant rule changes beginning with the 2027 season after the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) approved a series of updates aimed at improving player safety and modernizing the game.

One of the biggest changes gives schools the option of using either an 18-inch first base or a double first base, both designed to reduce collisions between runners and fielders at first base. The double first base is already scheduled to become mandatory in 2027, but the larger traditional-style base will now be permitted as an alternative.

The NFHS also approved one-way electronic communication from coaches in the dugout to pitchers and catchers for calling pitches. Previously, only catchers were allowed to receive electronic communication from the dugout.

Additional changes are on the way beginning in 2028, when new USA Baseball bat certification standards will take effect. The updated rules will expand the types of approved non-wood bats while maintaining performance and safety standards.

Other approved rule changes include allowing coaches to use electronic scoring devices while in the coach’s box and adopting an optional tiebreaker format that starts each extra inning with a runner on second base to help shorten games.

NFHS officials say the changes are intended to make the game safer while keeping pace with advancements in technology and equipment, all while preserving the integrity of high school baseball.
