SHAWANO, WI – The City of Shawano is warning residents and businesses to be on the lookout for a scam involving fraudulent invoices requesting payment by wire transfer.
City officials say they have been made aware of multiple cases in which individuals received fake invoices from someone falsely claiming to represent the City of Shawano. The invoices instruct recipients to submit payment through a wire transfer.
Officials stress that the City of Shawano will never request payment of an invoice by wire transfer.
Residents are encouraged to carefully review any invoice they receive and verify its legitimacy before making a payment. Anyone who receives an invoice that appears suspicious or includes instructions to pay by wire transfer should not send payment.
Instead, city officials recommend contacting the Shawano Police Department directly to verify the request and report the suspected scam.
The city is also encouraging residents to share the warning with friends, family, neighbors, and local businesses to help prevent others from becoming victims.
Officials say staying alert and verifying payment requests can help protect both personal and financial information from scammers.
