WIAA Preparing Contingency Plan for Potential Boys State Basketball Tournament Scheduling Conflict

MADISON, WI – The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association is preparing for a potential scheduling conflict that could impact the WIAA Boys State Basketball Tournament beginning in 2027.

The issue stems from a change to the Big Ten Men’s Hockey Tournament format. Starting in 2026, the conference championship game will be hosted by the highest remaining seed, rather than at a predetermined neutral site. If the University of Wisconsin qualifies as the top remaining team, the Badgers would host the Big Ten championship game at the Kohl Center on the same Friday night traditionally reserved for the WIAA Boys State Basketball Tournament.

Under that scenario, the WIAA would be displaced from the Kohl Center on Friday, while Thursday’s opening games and Saturday’s championship games would remain unaffected.

Because Wisconsin would not know whether it earned hosting rights until the Saturday before the state basketball tournament—the same day sectional finals are played—the WIAA has developed a contingency plan instead of moving games to another venue.

The association considered several alternatives, including shifting part of the tournament to the UW Field House, but officials determined that option presented significant challenges. The Field House seats approximately 7,500 spectators, far fewer than the Kohl Center. By comparison, more than 12,000 fans attended the Friday evening session of the 2026 Boys State Tournament.

Instead, the WIAA’s contingency plan would move the first two days of the tournament forward by one day.

If a conflict occurs, the tournament would begin on Wednesday instead of Thursday. Wednesday would feature the traditional Thursday schedule, while Thursday would host the games normally played on Friday, including the Division 5, Division 2, and Division 1 semifinal sessions.

Friday would remain open to accommodate the Big Ten Men’s Hockey Championship if Wisconsin is hosting. Following the hockey game, Kohl Center staff would convert the arena back to a basketball setup in time for the Saturday state championship games, which would remain unchanged.

The plan would create a Wednesday-Thursday-Saturday tournament schedule, but teams, schools, fans, and media would not know whether the adjustment is necessary until just days before the tournament.

While the WIAA believes the schedule change is the best available option, it could present challenges for fans who purchase annual tournament tickets, reserve hotel rooms, and schedule time off work well in advance.

The scheduling issue could become even more significant in 2030, when the Big Ten Men’s Hockey semifinals are scheduled for the same weekend as the WIAA Boys State Basketball Tournament, increasing the likelihood of a conflict if Wisconsin earns the right to host one of those games.

For now, the WIAA says the contingency plan provides the best opportunity to maintain the Boys State Tournament at the Kohl Center while minimizing disruption and preserving the experience for participating teams and fans.
