NORTHEAST WI- An Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect through Tuesday evening for much of Northeast Wisconsin, including Shawano, Brown, Outagamie and Waupaca counties. Heat index values could reach as high as 109 degrees, creating dangerous conditions for anyone spending time outdoors.
Health officials are urging residents to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day, wear lightweight clothing, and take frequent breaks in air-conditioned buildings. It’s also important to check on elderly neighbors, young children, and anyone without adequate cooling.
Heat exhaustion occurs when the body begins struggling to keep itself cool. Warning signs include heavy sweating, weakness, headache, dizziness, nausea, muscle cramps, a rapid heartbeat, and cool, clammy skin. If you experience these symptoms, move to a cool or shaded area, rest, and drink water or electrolyte beverages.
Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Symptoms include confusion, slurred speech, severe headache, vomiting, fainting, a rapid pulse, and a body temperature of 104 degrees or higher. Skin may feel hot and dry, although sweating can still occur. Anyone showing signs of heat stroke should have 911 called immediately while others work to cool the person down.
Doctors recommend drinking about eight ounces of water every 15 minutes during outdoor activity in the heat. He says if you feel thirsty, you’re already becoming dehydrated. A good way to monitor hydration is by checking urine color, it should be clear or pale yellow.
The hot and humid weather is expected to continue through midweek before temperatures gradually ease heading into the holiday weekend.
