NORTHEAST WISCONSIN – Wisconsin high school basketball moved one step closer to adopting a shot clock this week following action by the WIAA Board of Control.
The Board voted 10-1 in favor of a proposal to implement a 35-second shot clock for both boys and girls basketball beginning with the 2028-29 season. Before the rule can take effect, it must still receive approval from the full WIAA membership at the organization’s annual meeting in 2027.
In a separate 10-1 vote, the Board also approved the use of a shot clock in nonconference varsity boys and girls basketball games beginning with the upcoming 2026-27 season. Schools will be allowed to use a shot clock if both teams agree to do so before the game.
The votes mark significant progress for supporters of the shot clock after previous proposals had been rejected in each of the last three years.
If ultimately approved statewide, Wisconsin would join a growing number of states that have adopted shot clocks at the high school level. More than 30 states currently use a shot clock in some form, including neighboring Iowa and Minnesota, which have required the rule for several years.
