GILLETT, WI – As major road construction continues throughout the city, Gillett officials are reminding residents and visitors that local businesses remain open and the community’s biggest summer events will move forward as scheduled.
City Clerk and Treasurer Chelsea Anderson said construction has created challenges for motorists, but the city is working hard to keep the public informed and maintain access to businesses and attractions.
“Businesses are still open and we would like to still keep everyone coming here,” Anderson said. “We try to do weekly updates on Facebook telling people which roads are totally hard closed and which ones you can get around, but it’s always changing.”
Despite the ongoing Highway 22 reconstruction project, Anderson said several major summer events will proceed as planned, including the Roy Hubbard Memorial Truck Show, the Fourth of July Celebration, and the Oconto County Youth Fair.
“We have worked in contracts with our engineers and anybody else working on their projects that they will not be working during those events,” Anderson said. “They’ll have all of the openings open.”
While visitors may notice a few temporary changes, Anderson said organizers have taken steps to minimize disruptions and ensure public safety.
“We did have to change our parade routes for safety,” Anderson said. “We don’t want everybody walking on a non-paved road. We’re doing our best to make everybody happy.”
She added that normal entrances to city parks will remain accessible, though some visitors may encounter temporary gravel access routes while construction is underway.
“The normal entrances to the park, there’ll be gravel, but they will be open,” Anderson said.
Anderson also noted that contractors are making strong progress on the project and are currently ahead of schedule.
With construction continuing throughout the summer, city officials encourage residents and visitors to monitor updates online, follow posted detours, and continue supporting local businesses that have been impacted by the road work.
“We’re working really hard,” Anderson said. “They’re a week ahead of schedule. They’re doing great.”
