SHAWANO, WI – Drivers traveling along East Green Bay Street in Shawano will soon see a lower speed limit after action taken by the Shawano Common Council.
During its meeting Wednesday night, the council unanimously approved a proposal to reduce the speed limit on a portion of East Green Bay Street from 40 miles per hour to 35 miles per hour.
The change comes following a recommendation from the Shawano Police Department, which recently conducted traffic studies along the corridor. Police officials cited a history of crashes in the area as a key factor in recommending the reduction.
City leaders say lowering the speed limit is intended to improve safety for motorists and help reduce the likelihood of future accidents along the busy roadway.
The speed limit adjustment is expected to take effect once new signage is installed. City officials say crews will begin replacing and updating speed limit signs in the coming weeks.
The measure passed unanimously, reflecting the council’s support for efforts aimed at improving traffic safety throughout the city.
