SHAWANO, WI – New details have been released after a vehicle stolen from downtown Shawano Wednesday morning was later involved in a rollover crash in Outagamie County.
According to Shawano Police Chief Mike Musolff, the incident began shortly before 7:40 a.m. on June 10 when a woman left her vehicle running while making a quick stop in the 200 block of North Main Street.
“It appears the victim went inside to get a coffee or something,” Musolff said. “The individual entered the unattended vehicle and drove away.
Investigators later learned the suspect had recently just experienced freedom.
“Turns out that the person that took the car had been released from custody from the Shawano County Jail and was looking for a ride to go back to Milwaukee,” Musolff said.
The stolen vehicle was eventually located in Outagamie County, where the suspect crashed. Musolff said the vehicle rolled multiple times during the incident.
“She’s in custody in Outagamie County after crashing the car, and it ended up in an accident where it rolled four or five times,” Musolff said.
Musolff also referenced surveillance footage obtained with the assistance of Kasey Hohn of DotCom Branding, which captured the vehicle leaving the scene.
“If you watch the video that we were able to get from Kasey Hohn, his video shows that when she pulled out, she almost hit a truck and trailer,” Musolff said.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information is expected to be released as charges are referred to prosecutors.
