SHAWANO COUNTY, WI – As Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month continues, law enforcement officials are urging both drivers and motorcyclists to stay alert and patient on Wisconsin roadways as more bikes return for the spring and summer riding season.
Lieutenant Chris Madle says awareness from everyone behind the wheel is critical, especially as motorcycles can sometimes be more difficult to spot in traffic.
“Drivers need to obviously be more aware of motorcycles out on the road,” Madle said. “As we know we have crashes all the time and unfortunately when we have any of those crashes it involves motorcycles.”
Madle noted that crashes involving motorcycles often result in more severe injuries because riders do not have the same protection as occupants inside passenger vehicles. Even lower-speed crashes can quickly become dangerous for motorcyclists.
While officials reported only one fatal motorcycle crash locally last year, Madle says even a single death is too many and serves as a reminder for motorists to stay attentive every trip they take.
“Sometimes they’re a little hard to spot, once in a while if they’re zooming a little bit, but we have to be aware of them being there,” Madle said. “So I know we always have a couple issues every year, even at like the 22 shell there.”
Madle says many motorcycle crashes can be prevented through simple habits such as double-checking mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes or making turns. He also encouraged riders to operate safely, wear proper protective gear, and remain visible whenever possible.
Officials are reminding motorists that patience and awareness from both drivers and riders can go a long way toward preventing serious crashes during the busy riding season.
