NEW LONDON, WI- A New London native and Vietnam War aviator is being remembered for his service and sacrifice. Last night, a ceremony was held at New London High School to honor James Leonard Smith with a memorial in the school’s atrium. Smith, a 1962 graduate, served two tours during the Vietnam War and was killed in action in 1970 while flying a support mission over Laos. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart for his service. Community members, friends, and family gathered to reflect on his legacy of honor, leadership, and dedication to his country.
