WITTENBERG, WI – The Wittenberg-Birnamwood Chargers softball team is off to a blazing start this season, piling up runs and wins behind a balanced lineup and strong pitching, quickly establishing themselves as one of the area’s most dangerous teams.
Head Coach Joe Ladika says the key to the early success has been production from every spot in the order, not just a few standout players. “Our whole lineup right now is just hitting the ball so well and seeing it so well,” Ladika said. “It’s not just one or two girls every night, it’s up and down the lineup. Every night somebody else steps up with a clutch hit or finds a way to get on base.”
That depth has translated into explosive offensive performances, with the Chargers consistently putting up double-digit run totals. Ladika says the team’s ability to score in multiple ways has made them especially tough to defend. Whether it’s extra-base hits, small ball execution, or aggressive baserunning, Wittenberg-Birnamwood has found ways to manufacture runs. “We’ve got a lot of good overall speed,” Ladika added. “We run the bases extremely well and we’re really aggressive.”
Leading the charge offensively is Rory Salvesen, a four-year standout and one of the top players in the region. Batting over .600 early in the season, Salvesen leads the team in multiple categories and continues to deliver at a high level. Ladika says her success is no surprise. “She’s not just a talented player, she’s probably our hardest working player as well,” he said. “When you combine that talent with that kind of work ethic, it’s special. She’s a special player for sure.”
In the circle, the Chargers have also been solid, led by ace Kendall Lex, who has been consistent and efficient. Ladika describes her approach as precise and controlled. “She’s around the plate, doesn’t walk a lot, and trusts her defense,” he said. “She makes teams earn their runs.” The Chargers also benefit from a strong secondary option in Aerie, whose power pitching provides a different look and keeps opposing hitters off balance.
Beyond individual performances, Ladika says the team’s mindset has been a driving force. The Chargers emphasize plate discipline, waiting for good pitches and taking walks when needed, while using their speed to pressure defenses. “They’ve bought into that mindset,” Ladika said. “Get on base, and we feel like we have a great chance to score.”
With a deep lineup, strong pitching, and a competitive edge, Wittenberg-Birnamwood is not only off to a fast start, but showing the potential to sustain it as the season progresses.
