SHAWANO COUNTY, WI – Road construction is now underway on Highway BE in Bonduel, bringing detours and temporary changes that drivers will need to plan around over the coming weeks.
Bonduel Municipal Operations Director Jesse Rankin says the project will keep Highway BE closed to through traffic until June 1st, with access limited to local residents and businesses along the route. “The county’s official word is the road is closed long-term until June 1st,” Rankin said. “It’s not meant to be used as a corridor, only for people who live there or need to reach businesses.”
To help drivers navigate the closure, an official detour has been set up. Motorists are encouraged to take Highway 22, loop then head south on Highway 117. Rankin says the route is marked, but drivers should still allow for a little extra time, especially during peak travel hours.
In addition to the BE closure, drivers will also encounter impacts along Highway 29. The eastbound on and off ramps into Bonduel are temporarily closed as the Wisconsin Department of Transportation completes work in that area. Anyone traveling east toward Green Bay from Bonduel will need to pass the exit, take River Road, and loop back to access the highway.
Despite the closures, Rankin emphasized that businesses along Highway BE remain open and accessible for local traffic. However, he noted there may be times when construction makes portions of the road temporarily impassable as work progresses.
Looking ahead, Rankin says additional construction is expected along Highway 22, with work planned to continue south toward Shawano later this year. State and county officials are coordinating projects to avoid shutting down major routes at the same time.
For now, Rankin says the key takeaway for drivers is simple: plan ahead. “If that’s part of your daily commute, you’ve got to allow a little extra time and take a different route,” he said.
The Highway BE project is expected to wrap up by June 1st, weather permitting.
