WEYAUWEGA, WI – A fatal crash involving a wrong-way driver early Tuesday morning remains under investigation in Waupaca County.
According to the Waupaca County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the eastbound lanes of U.S. Highway 10 near Old Highway 49 around 1:36 a.m. on April 21. Authorities say a vehicle traveling the wrong direction westbound collided head-on with an eastbound semi-tractor trailer.
The driver of the wrong-way vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the semi was not injured and is cooperating with investigators.
While responding to the crash, deputies also stopped another driver who ignored traffic control barricades and entered the closed roadway. That driver was arrested on multiple charges, including reckless endangerment and operating with a revoked license.
Officials say alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash. Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, and the incident remains under investigation.
