Today marks the end of Wisconsin’s winter utility shutoff moratorium, meaning utility companies may now resume normal collection and disconnection procedures for past-due accounts.
The seasonal moratorium, which runs during the cold-weather months, is designed to protect residents from having essential services shut off during winter. With warmer weather now in place, utilities are once again allowed to disconnect service for non-payment, following required notices and procedures.
Utility providers across the state are reminding customers that any overdue balances accumulated over the winter may now be subject to payment plans, collections, or disconnection if arrangements are not made.
Advocates are encouraging residents who are behind on bills to contact their utility provider as soon as possible to set up payment plans or seek assistance programs before service interruptions occur.
