Mavis J. Kubitz, age 90, of the Village of Howard, formerly of the Town of Larrabee in Waupaca County, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, April 14, 2026.
Mavis Jean Wenzel was born March 24, 1936, in Shawano, the daughter of the late Carl and Viola (Schoenick) Wenzel. She was confirmed at St. James Lutheran Church and graduated from Shawano High School in 1954. Mavis met the love of her life, Wayne Kubitz, at the Caroline Ballroom, a meeting that soon led to roller-skating dates and a lasting romance. In a story often fondly remembered, Wayne sold one of his cows to purchase Mavis’ engagement ring. The couple was united in marriage on November 17, 1956, at St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano.
Together, they made their home in Green Bay, where Mavis worked at Shopko for more than 27 years. She was known for bringing strawberries she had picked from her garden to share and sell at work. Mavis also enjoyed bowling and spent many happy hours competing in leagues alongside Wayne.
Following her retirement in 1995, Mavis and Wayne moved to the Town of Larrabee, near Clintonville, where they became devoted members of St. Martin Lutheran Church. She was active in the Ladies Aid and generously gave her time helping serve funeral meals. Mavis also enjoyed time spent outdoors, occasionally deer hunting with family on their land, and had a special fondness for cardinals.
Mavis will be remembered for her deep love of family and her unwavering Christian faith.
She is survived by her loving husband, Wayne Kubitz; her daughter, Lori (Steve) Kunstman; her son, Jon (Beth) Kubitz; her grandchildren, Taylor and Jordyn Kunstman, Nick (Gwen) Kubitz, and Annamarie (Richie Massey) Kubitz; and her great-granddaughter, Viola Kubitz.
Mavis was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Viola Wenzel; her brother, Richard Wenzel; and her sister, Marlene (Jerry) Schultz.
A memorial service for Mavis will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at St. Martin Lutheran Church in Clintonville, with Rev. Jason Zobel officiating. Visitation will take place at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Inurnment will be held at a later date at Nicolet Memorial Park in Green Bay.
