James A. “Jim” Yeakey, age 86, of Shawano, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 10, 2026, surrounded by the love of family and friends as he entered into the arms of the Lord.
Jim was born April 1, 1940, in Milwaukee, to the late Oliver and Mildred (Zebrick) Yeakey. He was raised in Appleton and went on to attend UW–Oshkosh, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in history education. He later continued his education, obtaining a master’s degree in counseling along with a certificate in administration. Jim dedicated his career to education, serving as principal at Franklin Middle School in Shawano until his retirement in 1997.
While attending college, Jim met the love of his life, Jan Luebke. The couple was united in marriage on August 8, 1964, in Appleton, and shared 40 wonderful years together until Jan’s passing in 2004. Together, they restored a century-old home and opened the Five Keys Bed & Breakfast in Shawano, welcoming guests from around the world and creating lasting memories before closing in 2004.
A devoted member of Zion Lutheran Church, Jim answered the Lord’s call through many roles over the years. He and Jan founded the church’s Puppet Ministry, bringing joy to countless parishioners. Jim also served as a mentor, church council member, and treasurer, faithfully giving his time and talents to his church community.
Jim was a passionate fan of the Milwaukee Brewers and Green Bay Packers and enjoyed hunting and trains. Above all, he cherished time with his grandchildren and took great pride in being part of their lives and activities.
Jim is survived by his loving children, Matt (Stella) Yeakey of Madison, Joel Yeakey of Shawano, and Leigh (David) Welander of Shawano; six grandchildren, Trevor, Marcus (fiancé Erin Harger), Lauren, Isaac, Julia, and Micah; and his niece, Deena Wetzel. He was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Harold Wetzel, as well as his beloved wife, Jan.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at Mickelson Funeral Service in Shawano, with Pastor Lois Graper officiating. Visitation will take place from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
