TOWN OF GREEN VALLEY, WI – Authorities have identified both the man involved and the deputy who fired his weapon during an early March incident in Shawano County. According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, deputies were called just before 1:45 a.m. on March 10 to a disturbance at a home along Highway 22 in the town of Green Valley. When officers arrived, they found 38-year-old Jonathan L. Lupe barricaded inside a bathroom. Investigators say Lupe refused to come out and told deputies he had a gun. Attempts to use less-lethal force were unsuccessful, and officials say Lupe then moved toward deputies while holding what they believed was a firearm. Deputy Cole Vande Hei, who has about four and a half years of law enforcement experience, fired his weapon, striking Lupe. Emergency crews responded and attempted life-saving measures before Lupe was transported to a hospital, where he later died.
