GILLETT, WI – Residents in Gillett may have noticed crews working underground this week as the city begins sewer and water line improvements funded through a USDA loan.
City Clerk Chelsea Anderson says the project is already making progress, though some households have experienced temporary disruptions. Water service was shut off for a few hours at a time in different sections of the city while crews completed portions of the work. Anderson says restoring water service was one of the most critical parts of the project, and that phase has now been completed.
While the work is affecting many households, Anderson says the biggest ongoing impact residents will notice is temporary road construction as upgrades continue. Overall, she expects the sewer work itself to move forward smoothly with minimal long-term disruption.
City leaders say the timing of the project is intentional. With the Wisconsin Department of Transportation planning to reconstruct the roadway in a couple of years, officials wanted to replace aging clay pipe infrastructure before the new road is built. Anderson says the system was not facing an immediate failure, but completing the underground improvements now will help prevent future water main or sewer breaks and protect the new roadway.
Once finished, the combined road and infrastructure upgrades are expected to create a smoother, more modern entrance into Gillett, something city leaders say will benefit both residents and visitors for years to come.
