NORTHEAST WISCONSIN – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has announced new Surface Water Grant funding that will support water quality and habitat improvement projects in both Shawano and Marathon counties. The grants are part of a statewide effort focused on protecting and restoring Wisconsin’s lakes, rivers, and streams.
In Shawano County, funding will help replace culverts along the North Branch Embarrass River, restoring natural stream flow and improving fish habitat along more than 20 miles of trout waters. DNR officials say these upgrades help reconnect streams and create healthier environments for aquatic life.
Meanwhile in Marathon County, a county-wide initiative will install 35-foot vegetative buffers along navigable waters. Those buffers are designed to reduce runoff, filter pollutants, and improve overall water quality.
DNR leaders say projects like these, led at the local level, provide long-lasting benefits for water quality, wildlife habitat, and outdoor recreation opportunities across the region.
