SHAWANO, WI – Staff with Safe Haven are spending the month of February focused on students, bringing lessons about healthy relationships directly into local schools. Executive Director Mindy Lohff says this time of year is especially busy as the organization works with youth and teens to provide education and encouragement centered on respect and safety.
Lohff says prevention doesn’t stop at the school doors, urging parents and guardians to model healthy relationship behaviors at home. She notes that young people often learn as much from the examples they see as from the lessons they’re taught, making positive role models a key part of the prevention effort.
Program Supervisor Treena Siebold says staff are also setting up information booths and connecting with students in a more relaxed and approachable setting. Safe Haven team members have been visiting schools in Bonduel, the Shawano School District, and Wittenberg, working with both middle school and high school students.
Organizers say the overall goal is to make sure teens understand what healthy relationships look like and know that support is available if they need it. By building awareness early, Safe Haven hopes to help create safer, more respectful relationships throughout the community.
