NORTHEAST WISCONSIN – With the close of holiday hunts and the regular deer season, the focus of Wisconsin’s outdoor community is shifting to one of the state’s most unique traditions, sturgeon spearing on the Lake Winnebago system. Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Warden Clark Delzer says the season officially opens February 14, marking the start of a highly anticipated event for spearers across the region.
Delzer notes that participation isn’t limited to those with a tag. He encourages families and visitors to check out the activity at weigh-in and registration stations set up along the lakeshore, where large lake sturgeon are brought in and recorded. Spectators can often see massive fish up close while learning more about the fishery and the conservation efforts that help sustain it.
He says the operation itself is impressive to watch, with wardens, biologists, and volunteers working together throughout the season. For many, simply taking in the atmosphere and witnessing the tradition firsthand has become part of the experience. Tag or no tag, Delzer says the Winnebago system offers a memorable way to connect with Wisconsin’s outdoor heritage.
