SHAWANO, WI- The Shawano School District will once again be closed to open enrollment for special education students for the 2026–27 school year, citing a lack of available space.
District officials say current staffing ratios mean there are no openings available for incoming special education students through the state’s open enrollment program. However, the district will remain open for open enrollment at all grade levels in general education.
Superintendent Kurt Krizan says the decision is not unusual and reflects a broader trend across the state.
“There are not many districts that are open for special education open enrollment,” Krizan said.
District administrators say the closure applies only to special education open enrollment and does not impact students who currently attend the district or those enrolling in general education programs.
Families considering open enrollment are encouraged to review eligibility requirements and contact the district with questions as application deadlines approach.
