NEW LONDON, WI – The New London Common Council has approved spending up to $35,000 to move books and materials to the city’s new library location. The move will take place after March 1 and will relocate the collection from the current New London Public Library to the former First State Bank buildings downtown.
Library Director Ann Hunt told council members that using city staff or volunteers was not a practical option due to the size of the collection and the physical demands involved. She explained that a professional moving service is the safest and most efficient way to protect library materials during the transition.
Hunt also noted that the overall cost of the move was reduced thanks to outside support and savings. A $10,000 gift from the Carnegie Foundation helped offset expenses, along with an additional $5,000 saved by purchasing new shelving for the children’s department instead of relocating existing units.
Some council members raised concerns about the price tag, questioning whether the cost was too high. City officials responded that the expense reflects the complexity of the move and the need to ensure the library’s collection is transported securely and without damage.
The relocation marks another major step toward opening New London’s new library facility, which city leaders say will better serve residents and modernize library services for the community.
