SHAWANO, WI – Health officials say a recent measles outbreak in Oconto County has now been contained, with 36 confirmed cases associated with the incident. Shawanno-Menominee Counties Health Director Nick Mau says the outbreak is considered over, but monitoring efforts remain in place.
According to health officials, investigators traced the outbreak back to a large family gathering that originated out of state. Officials say 100 percent of the individuals who tested positive for measles were unvaccinated, highlighting the role immunizations play in preventing the spread of the virus.
Despite the situation settling, the Shawano-Menominee Counties Health Department continues to offer MMR vaccines for anyone seeking protection against measles, mumps, and rubella. Health leaders say vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent future outbreaks.
Officials add that while there are no active cases tied to the outbreak, public health teams remain alert and prepared to respond quickly should new cases emerge.
