Firefighter Spotlight: Hurkman Marks 52 Years of Service With a Heart for Community
For more than five decades, Assistant Fire Chief Steve Hurkman has been a steady presence on the Seymour Fire Department, a familiar face at emergency scenes and a dependable teammate on every call. With more than 52 years of service under his belt, he represents a generation of volunteers shaped by deep community ties, strong work ethic, and a commitment to stepping in when others need help.
Steve joined the department in the early 1970s, at a time when Seymour felt very different. “Back in the day, Seymour was a lot more community-oriented. You pretty much knew everyone downtown,” he recalled. As the city has grown and changed, so has the department, but Steve’s dedication has remained constant.
For Steve, the reward is in the impact—turning someone’s worst day into something more manageable, and knowing he played a part in helping his neighbors.
