SHAWANO COUNTY, WI – As ice fishing activity increases across the region, Clark Delzer, a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources warden, is reminding anglers that preparation and awareness are critical when traveling on frozen lakes.
Delzer says whether anglers are moving an ice shanty or heading to a new fishing spot, caution should always come first. He warns against exploring unfamiliar ice and encourages anglers to stick to areas they know are safe, noting that conditions can change quickly from one location to another.
In addition to choosing travel routes carefully, Delzer says anglers should always carry essential safety gear, even when the ice appears solid. He strongly recommends wearing a float coat or float suit, which can provide valuable buoyancy if someone breaks through the ice.
Delzer also cautions anglers about distractions while driving on the ice. He advises drivers to roll vehicle windows down while traveling, explaining that if a vehicle begins to sink, doors can be difficult to open, and open windows can allow for a faster escape.
He adds that ATVs and UTVs can break through ice rapidly due to their weight, making alert driving and constant awareness essential. The Wisconsin DNR encourages anglers to slow down, stay focused, and prioritize safety whenever using vehicles on frozen lakes.
