SHAWANO COUNTY, WI – Snowmobile riders across Shawano County are beginning to see improved trail conditions as winter weather settles in and snow coverage increases.
Mark Schraufnagel, a Wisconsin DNR warden, says conditions are shaping up well for the start of the season, with some trails already open in parts of the county. According to Schraufnagel, far western Shawano County currently has open areas, along with sections in the northern half of Green Valley.
While conditions are improving, Schraufnagel reminds riders that trail conditions can change quickly, especially with fluctuating temperatures and weather patterns. Riders are urged to check trail status before heading out by visiting their county website or calling the snowmobile hotline at 715-524-4349.
DNR officials also emphasize that safety should remain a top priority throughout the snowmobile season. Schraufnagel says one of the best ways riders can prepare is by taking a snowmobile safety course.
Anyone born on or after January 1, 1985, is required to complete a snowmobile safety course before operating on public trails or areas. Schraufnagel says courses are available online or in person, with more information available on the Wisconsin DNR website.
