SHAWANO COUNTY, WI – Shawano County officials say they are nearing a key milestone in plans for a new courthouse and government complex, with only one remaining privately owned home on 4th Street still needed before Phase 1 of construction can begin. County Board Chairman Tom Kautza said the county now owns nearly the entire block identified for development, calling the final property critical to moving the project forward.
Kautza noted that the long-term vision for the project includes reimagining the use of the existing courthouse once new facilities are built. Under the current proposal, the old courthouse would be demolished and converted into a parking lot serving the new courthouse, judicial center, and expanded jail support facilities. The new courthouse would be constructed just west of the existing building, with the judicial center located directly north of it.
County leaders say the expanded layout will provide more space for jail operations, improve department efficiency, and add much-needed storage capacity for sheriff’s office and courthouse records. Officials expect additional updates in early 2026 as property negotiations wrap up and architects continue refining floor plans for the multi-building complex.
