SHAWANO COUNTY, WI – A significant boost is on the way for Wisconsin’s timber industry as a Shawano County mill prepares to reopen after sitting idle for more than a year. Industry leaders say the reopening will help relieve mounting pressure across the Northwoods, where the closures of major mills in Park Falls, Wisconsin Rapids, and Duluth have left loggers with fewer places to process wood.
Those shutdowns forced many haulers to drive longer distances at greater expense, creating financial strain and pushing some longtime loggers out of the industry. The Shawano County facility is being brought back online with support from a federal loan program designed to strengthen rural timber production and stabilize local economies.
Officials say renewed investment in mills like this one is essential for improving forest health, supporting rural jobs, and ensuring the continued availability of American-made wood products.
