NEOPIT, WI – A Neopit couple has been indicted on federal charges after authorities say their infant child suffered significant injuries, including broken bones and scalding burns. A federal grand jury charged 23-year-old Louis Tucker and 21-year-old Nyomi Acosta with one count each of child abuse and child neglect, crimes that carry a maximum penalty of 17 and a half years in prison.
According to investigators, the baby was repeatedly struck during incidents this fall, resulting in fractures to the child’s arm. Prosecutors also say the infant sustained serious burns to the back and torso, and that the couple failed to seek proper medical treatment despite the severity of the injuries.
Officials allege the lack of care put the child’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being at serious risk. Tucker and Acosta were arrested earlier this month and remain in custody at the Menominee Tribal Jail as they await a February trial date.
