TIGERTON, WI – The Tigerton School District is gaining countywide recognition for its proactive approach to school safety, with officials saying the district has gone leaps and bounds in implementing modern safety practices. According to Shawano County Sheriff’s Office member Nate Thornborrow, Tigerton is standing out among smaller districts for its commitment to preparedness and student involvement.
Thornborrow says that while smaller districts often face challenges in adopting wide-reaching safety protocols, Tigerton is proving that size is no barrier to progress. “A lot of our smaller districts, it’s harder for them to implement some of the safety protocols we have put in place,” he said. “But smaller districts like Tigerton have done a phenomenal job this year, they’ve gone leaps and bounds.”
A major part of that progress comes from newly implemented Strategic Response Plans, which are now helping students across multiple Shawano County districts become more engaged in safety training. Thornborrow notes that students are increasingly stepping up to report concerning behavior or potential threats. “We see a lot more students coming forward with safety concerns, which is what we want to see,” he said.
Technology is also playing an important role. Thornborrow highlights the growing use of the Speak Up, Speak Out app, an anonymous reporting tool that empowers students to quickly alert authorities if they feel unsafe.
With Tigerton leading by example, county officials hope other districts will continue strengthening safety initiatives to ensure a secure learning environment for all students and staff.
