STATE OF WISCONSIN – Wisconsin State Patrol has kicked off its annual Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign, joining law enforcement agencies across the state in an effort to combat impaired driving during the holiday season. The enforcement period is underway now through New Year’s Day, with officers increasing patrols and public outreach to remind drivers of the risks and consequences of driving under the influence.
Last year’s holiday season saw 403 impaired-driving crashes in Wisconsin, resulting in nine deaths and 169 injuries. State Patrol Superintendent Tim Carnahan says each of those crashes was preventable and stresses the importance of planning ahead before holiday celebrations begin.
Officials also note that an OWI conviction can cost a driver around $10,000 when factoring in fines, court fees, lost wages, increased insurance rates, and required vehicle services. To avoid impaired driving, residents are encouraged to use designated drivers, rideshare services, taxis, public transit, or Safe Ride programs.
