SHAWANO, WI – Shawano Police Chief Mike Musolff is reminding residents to stay alert as package deliveries increase across the community. Musolff urges homeowners to bring packages inside as quickly as possible to reduce the risk of porch theft, noting that while Shawano hasn’t yet seen a major spike in porch pirate cases, prevention is far easier than dealing with stolen goods.
But Musolff warns that package theft isn’t the only concern this time of year. Retail theft and shoplifting typically rise in December, and he says the department continues to see troubling trends. “You’re not just stealing from the stores,” Musolff said. “You’re creating more of these people that are stealing, and you’re creating a higher cost of items for the consumer that doesn’t steal.”
Musolff adds that the Shawano area has experienced significant increases in shoplifting and retail theft in recent years, and he encourages residents and businesses to report suspicious activity as holiday traffic continues.
