TOWN OF POUND, WI – A Pound woman is facing multiple felony charges, including homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, after a wrong-way crash on Thanksgiving Day that killed one person and injured two others on I-43.
According to prosecutors, 67-year-old Cheryl Mitchell admitted to drinking three glasses of wine before driving from Denmark toward Pound. Investigators say she entered the interstate in the wrong direction and struck another vehicle head-on near the State 96 exit shortly after 5 p.m.
Mitchell appeared in court Monday, where a judge set her bond at $150,000 cash. She also faces two additional counts of injury by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle.
The criminal complaint states that Mitchell showed signs of intoxication at the scene, including slurred speech and difficulty maintaining balance. She declined to perform field sobriety tests at the hospital, though a blood sample was taken; results were not included in the complaint.
The crash injured a husband and wife and fatally injured their son, who died two days later from his injuries. Mitchell is scheduled to return to court December 9 for a preliminary hearing.
