NORTHEAST WISCONSIN – As gun deer season approaches in Wisconsin, the DNR is urging hunters to make sure they are prepared before heading into the woods. DNR Warden Mark Schraufnagel says the first and most important step is purchasing and having your license ready. “Now would be the time, if you don’t have your license yet, let’s get that done,” he said, adding that each firearm deer license includes one statewide buck tag, now referred to as a harvest authorization.
For hunters still deciding where to set up this weekend, the DNR says its online resources can help make planning easier. Wildlife expert Jackie Christopher recommends visiting the department’s website and using the interactive Public Access Lands map. “If you go to dnr.wisconsin.gov and search public access lands, that will take you to an interactive map,” she explained.
Officials say checking license requirements and scouting locations ahead of time will help hunters stay safe, ensure they’re in the correct zones, and avoid issues once they’re in the field.
