NEW LONDON, WI – The City of New London is preparing for a sewer rate increase that will take effect on January 1, 2026, as part of a long-term plan to upgrade the city’s wastewater treatment facility.
The Common Council recently approved the first reading of an ordinance that raises the fixed monthly sewer charge by $16.90 for all meter sizes. According to Public Works Director Robert Garske, the increase will help fund major facility improvements and a new rate study, the city’s first since 2022. Garske says the change could amount to about $202 more per year for the average resident but is necessary to keep pace with infrastructure needs.
City Administrator Chad Hoerth says engineering work for the treatment plant upgrades will begin next year and is expected to come with significant costs. Hoerth emphasized that early funding is critical to ensure the city can move forward with required improvements.
The rate change still requires a second reading and final approval by the Common Council before it officially takes effect.
