SHAWANO COUNTY, WI – As colder weather moves in, hunters across Shawano County are preparing for the upcoming hunting seasons and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is reminding everyone to help keep the local deer herd healthy.
Wildlife Biologist Jaqi Christopher says gun deer season runs from November 22nd through the 30th, followed by muzzleloader season and then the statewide antlerless hunt. Shawano County will also host its Holiday Hunt later in the season.
Christopher says monitoring for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) remains a top priority after a new positive case was confirmed this year, the county’s first of the season. “Historically, we’ve seen a cluster of positives in the Tigerton area,” she noted.
The DNR is encouraging hunters to use one of several CWD testing drop-off sites available in Navarino, Marion, and Wittenberg, which are open throughout the season for convenient sample submissions.
