SHAWANO, WI – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is urging residents to stay informed about what’s in their drinking water, following a recent presentation at Shawano High School focused on wells and groundwater safety.
Water Supply Specialist Ben Degner says the City of Shawano’s public water system continues to meet high safety standards and remains in excellent condition. However, he notes that private wells are not monitored by the EPA, making it the responsibility of property owners to regularly test their own water for contaminants.
Degner also warned that groundwater can become contaminated when it interacts with surface water, such as runoff from phosphorus-rich areas, wetlands, or nearby water bodies. “Contaminants that are on the ground or in surface water can make their way through groundwater,” he explained, posing potential risks to families and vulnerable individuals.
The DNR encourages residents with private wells to test their water at least once a year and to stay proactive about ensuring the long-term safety and quality of their drinking water.
