SHAWANO, WI – As Domestic Violence Awareness Month wraps up, advocates are reminding the community that abuse often goes far beyond physical violence. Treena Siebold, Program Supervisor with Safe Haven, says an important educational tool, the Power and Control Wheel, helps people recognize the early red flags of manipulation and coercive control in relationships.
Sebold explains that the wheel breaks down common patterns of abusive behavior, including isolation, threats, emotional manipulation, and financial control, allowing individuals to better identify warning signs. She emphasizes that abuse is rarely a single incident such as hitting or yelling, it often builds through ongoing intimidation or emotional harm.
Siebold says understanding these patterns is crucial to prevention and support, empowering victims and communities to recognize unhealthy dynamics and seek help before the abuse escalates.
