SHAWANO, WI – The Shawano Area Matthew 25 (SAM25) emergency shelter has officially opened its doors for the season earlier than planned, as local needs for housing assistance continue to rise.
Executive Director Kendra Brusewitz says the earlier start means some adjustments to the shelter’s operating schedule, with services now running from October 15 through May 15. The decision, she says, was made in response to a growing number of individuals and families facing homelessness and financial hardship in the Shawano area.
“We just saw a growing need in the community of those struggling with homelessness and poverty,” Brusewitz said.
SAM25’s mission extends beyond providing a warm place to sleep, it’s about creating pathways to hope, housing, and long-term stability for Shawano residents. In addition to emergency shelter services, the organization offers a free health clinic, resource center, and several year-round programs designed to connect families with resources that promote lasting independence.
Brusewitz says the earlier opening ensures the organization can meet the rising demand for help as colder weather approaches, continuing SAM25’s commitment to serving those most in need.
