SHAWANO, WI – As Domestic Violence Awareness Month continues, local advocates are working to educate the community on the many forms abuse can take, beyond what’s visible.
Treena Siebold, program supervisor at Safe Haven of Shawano County, says the Power and Control Wheel is an important tool that helps people understand that abuse is not always physical or sexual. “It helps show how abuse can also include intimidation, manipulation, or financial control,” Siebold explained. “Those red flags can make all the difference in helping someone find safety and support.”
Siebold says she’s seen firsthand how domestic violence impacts entire families, particularly children who are often caught in the middle of abusive situations. She adds that even when an abuser doesn’t have a custodial or parental role, the effects on a child’s emotional well-being can be lasting.
Safe Haven continues to offer outreach, shelter, and education services throughout Shawano County, encouraging community members to learn the warning signs and support those affected by domestic violence.
